Where on earth is Argenton sur Creuse?

People often ask us just where is Argenton sur Creuse?

Unlike Paris, Nice, Bordeaux, Lyon or Mont Saint-Michel, Argenton is off the beaten tourist track, nestled snuggly in the centre of France.

In fact, if you draw a square around all the outermost parts of France, Argenton is smack bang in the middle of this beautiful country (thanks Google Maps!):

It’s about 2 and a half hours south of Paris by train (take the SNCF intercity Paris-Limoges train which departs from Gare d’Austerlitz Paris) or 3 hours by car (the roads are great but allow plenty of euros for the tolls!):

Once you’ve passed Chateauroux (about 30km north), you’re almost there! (If travelling by rail, you may need to change trains here, although direct trains are available once or twice a day.)

Whether driving from the north or the south, take the A20 and exit 18 to Argenton S/C:

If you ever get the chance to visit you might just fall in love with the place…

like we did!

Couldn’t agree more — I fell in love with a house for sale on the internet back in 2004. Have been living in Saint Marcel since 2006. I’m an American/Brit, moved to Devon in 86, now permanent in France.

  2. So not so far from us really, we are in Charroux which is south of Poitiers.

Still 2 1/2 hours away by car (according to google maps) but I see you’re not too far from Clermont-Ferrand airport – that must be handy!

      • No I think you must have a different Charroux, our nearest airport is Poitiers. We are half way between Poitiers and Angouleme. I always say to people who ask where we are. The nerest place you will have heard of is Cognac but whilst they will have heard of it a lot will not have a clue where it is. A bit like Argenton!

Except most people have never heard of Argenton sur Creuse!

  3. I love to travel off the beaten path. Looks like a really beautiful corner of the world!
