Karaoke anyone?

Anyone who knows us, knows we love karaoke, so we were surprised and delighted on our very first visit to Argenton sur Creuse in France – way back in early 2009 (to see firsthand the town and the house before we signed on the dotted line and bought that which, up until then, we had only seen in photos ) – to find that there was fortnightly karaoke at a café in town.

But by the time settlement took place and we were back in France later that year to start the mammoth task of renovating our stone townhouse, the karaoke was no longer. No matter, we understand how these things come and go – and it’s not like we had nothing to do!

But on our most recent trip, we were pleased to find that Havana Café was once again running karaoke – tous les jeudis – every Thursday.

Whoo hoo!

Unsure of what time it started, we walked into town around 8pm and had plenty of time for a quiet dinner there before the fun finally started about 9.45.

Thankfully, there was a huge selection of songs in English – which is not surprising seeing the majority of songs heard on French radio are in English. Actually, learning songs in a foreign language is a great way to absorb new words and phrases – but to be confident enough to sing French in front of the native speakers? I think that’s a long way off!

The night had a real party atmosphere, with a mix of dance-music and karaoke, and Tony was (deservedly) the star of the show in front of the small but friendly crowd.

There’s nothing like doing a bit of singing and dancing for a great night out (or a great night in for that matter!)

I wonder if the karaoke will still be running when we get back? As our renovations come to an end, maybe we will be able to get out more often (and not be too tired to enjoy a bit of nightlife)!

Nola, that sounds like so much fun. My hubby loves to sing, and will say that he is definately better than Moi. Although I try….doing most of my singing with fav tunes in the hot tub, warbling away. And Living in the country north of Toronto doesn’t give us the opportunity of much karaoke. Athough last Christmas I bought 4 mics, and a few karaoke cd’s for the Wii. Had alot of fun with our kids. Also, know that is such a passion for Sandi and Dutchy.

One of the things I love about karaoke is that it brings together a whole bunch of different types of people, and you get to hear all sorts of songs.Keep practising at home, but get out and give it a try when you get the chance! It doesn’t take much to get hooked 🙂

Hi, I sort of fell across your blog — very entertaining. I’m American by birth, British by choice and now living in Saint Marcel, so really just up the street from your French house in Argenton. I am tempted by the karaoke as I do like to sing, but have never tried karaoke.

So glad you enjoyed reading my blog (I sure have fun doing it!) – we’re practically neighbours! And if you like singing you just have to give karaoke a try one of these days, it really is such good fun. Why not check out Havana Cafe? If they aren’t running it anymore when we get back we’re going to search for a venue in Chateauroux.
